COMPARITIVE STUDY
CHENNAI – MALAYSIA
We visited UTM University of Technology of Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur (KL) and Johor Bharu (JB) as a part of the International Design Studio. The students worked on understanding a site in KL, DATUNG KEMPUNG KEERAMAT in comparison with THIRUMIZHISAI in Chennai.
EXPLORING
URBAN FORMS
Understanding the growth of the Urban Form and analyzing the factors that contribute to this growth or the lack of growth was one of the key aspects of the study. Based on the study of the urban form of the site in Chennai, the students made observations in the site in KL and presented their views.

URBAN IMPRESSIONS
The Design Studio was curated to study a liminal space in both the sites and conceptualizes a design ideas based on the analysis. The design was processed and imagined through diagrams and discussions.

KUALA LUMPUR & JOHOR BAHARU
A Know Your City trip to KUALA LUMPUR and JOHOR BAHARU, exploring and travelling along the city visiting various places of significance like the KL tower, Patronas Twin Tower, Puthrajaya and its buildings, Batu Caves and other heritage areas.
PLACEMAKING
THINKING THROUGH MODEL MAKING
The visit to HYDERABAD was in collaboration with School of Architecture of SVCA where we worked with their students and faculties of first year to create a 6 day studio on PLACEMAKING and some site visits.

Hyderabad is the capital and largest city of the Indian state of Telangana.
Hyderabad is the capital of one of the most techno savvy state in India,Telangana. The previous name of this city was Bagyanagaram.This city is also called the ‘city of pearls’ because of the major dealing of pearls that is done from this part of the state. Hyderabad was founded in 1591 and planned as a grid with the Charminar at its centre.

FORM BUILDING
The visit to INDORE was in collaboration with School of Architecture of IPS Academy where we worked with their students and faculties of first year to create a 6 day studio on Biomimicry and some site visits.

FORMS
Indore is the largest and most populous city in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. It is consistently ranked as the cleanest city in India.
Modern-day Indore traces its roots to its 16th-century founding as a trading hub between the Deccan and Delhi. It was founded on the banks of the Kanh and Saraswati rivers. The city came under the Maratha Empire, on 18 May 1724, after Peshwa Baji Rao I assumed the full control of Malwa.

INNOVATIVE PRODUCT DESIGN SOLUTIONS
The Design Studio was curated to study shelters of birds or insects, understanding its form and its volume. Through this process the form was adapted into a product design of everyday utilities.

The visit to GUWAHATI was based on exploring the banks of BRAHMAPUTRA RIVER. The river system is on the landmass enclosed on the north by the Himalayas and has wonderful crafts that has evolved.

Assam first came to recognition by the virtue of its exemplary silk, cane and bamboo products which are still believed to be its best offering.
The precious bell metal industry is the second-largest handicraft industry of Assam. Sarthebari in Bajali district of Assam is home to this craft.

Perched on the East Khasi Hills, Laitlum Canyons is a less explored but one of the most picturesque tourist and trekking destinations in Shillong.

Pune is widely regarded to be the second major IT hub and the most important automobile and manufacturing hub in India. Pune is known for its many high-quality educational institutions which gave the city the sobriquet of “the Oxford of the East”.

UNDERSTANDING MUMBAI WITH KRVIA
The Vertical Studio in KRVIA Mumbai gave a wide knowledge about the city of Mumbai, its Master Plan and development. The students interacted with various faculties from the esteemed institution. The discussion was taken forward to understand architecture and city planning.

UNDERSTANDING THE URBAN CONTEXT OF GURGAON – SUSHANT SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE
.The Rapid Studio 2021 was a collaboration with Sushant School of Architecture mainly focusing on understanding their Urban Study of Gurgaon as a precursor to the Urban Design studio that our students will be undergoing in the upcoming semester. We looked at Gurgaon from the lens of Culture, Investments and Networks. We also saw the sub urban city from the perception Urban Design, Landscape Architecture, Built Heritage and Interior Architecture. We had multiple site visits to understand the relevance of the study and the personal sense of place.

INSTITUTION DESIGN – SUSHANT SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE
.The Vertical Studio 2021 was a collaboration with Sushant School of Architecture mainly focusing on design and development of a campus. The sessions also included general understanding of the students works and interaction with them to get an idea of their design attitude and design process. The workshop also included a special session on Historic Architecture and its paths.
Urban Design problem on the topic Child and the City has been introduced simultaneously in three states CHENNAI, KOCHI AND MANGALORE respectively as a Vertical studio project. Students from NITTE Mangalore, ASADI, Kochi and RVS Padmavathy School of Architecture, Chennai have joined and are working on the same design problem in three different cities of South India at the same time. Problems are set in order to maximize opportunities for learning, skill acquisition, and idea dissemination at all levels, from beginning to intermediate, allowing students to progress at their own rate. Topics are coordinated in content and timing and cover essential concerns and techniques of architectural design.

The concept of the workshop revolved around UNICEF’s initiative “Child Friendly Cities”. The criteria of evaluating the site and bringing out design principles were based on the criteria from the initiative.

T.NAGAR
T.Nagar is a busy commercial neighborhood where the residential hides behind the pompous commercial layer. The site has four parks with unique DNA hidden away into the residential sector. The student groups studied the use of all the parks with the UNICEF criteria in mind.

The participants came out with innovative proposals for all the sites and presented in unique methods that can be applied for the issues that were identified on site.
